Chelsea news and transfers recap: Trio sign new contracts

The Blues, after such a strong finish to the 2020/21 campaign, are being linked with a host of new players ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s first full season in charge. Yesterday, Chelsea announced contract extensions for Thomas Tuchel, Thiago Silva and Olivier Giroud in what is likely to be the start of a busy summer for Marina Granovskaia. The German manager, who replaced Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge in January, has penned new terms following the victory over Manchester City in Porto. The 47-year-old has overseen 19 victories with the Blues, while suffering only five defeats, in his 30 games at the helm. The club have also announced that Olivier Giroud’s contract has been extended until summer 2022. The striker’s current deal was set to run out at the end of the 2020-21 season but Chelsea triggered an option in April to extend that contract. He will now stay in west London for a fourth full season. Signed by Frank Lampard, Silva remained a first-team fixture under the management of Thomas Tuchel and ended his first Blues season with major silverware as they beat Manchester City in the Champions League final. The 36-year-old’s extension keeps him at Chelsea for another 12 months, until the summer of 2022
