Black Panther made history during Tuesday’s announcement of the 2019 Oscar nominees becoming the first comic book based film to earn a best picture nomination. It is also the first ever Best Picture nomination for Marvel Studios. It is a major step for comic book movies, which were previously ignored by the Academy from acquiring film’s top honor.
The most notable snub was Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” in 2008 which is considered by many to be the best superhero film of all time. The outcry over its omission was the reason the Academy decided to expand the Best Picture category from five to up to ten nominees.
Overall, Black Panther has a total of seven nominations, in addition to Best Picture, it has also been recognized for Original score, Original Song, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Production Design and Costume Design.
